SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Unmarried Women in the Homestead Act of 1862
DESCRIPTION:***Due to potential winter weather\, the Pipestone County Museum has rescheduled Hannah Haksgaard's\, presentation on "Unmarried Women in the Homestead Act of 1862."  The talk\, previously scheduled for Thursday\, November 10th will be held Tuesday\, November 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room located in the lower level of the Pipestone County Courthouse. ***\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Pipestone County Museum will be hosting Hannah Haksgaard\, author and Professor of Law\, with her presentation entitled "Unmarried Women in the Homestead Act of 1862."  This talk will share the fascinating history of the Congressional decision to include unmarried women in the Homestead Act of 1862. The presentation also analyzes how the lived experiences of female homesteaders matched up with the expectations of the Congressional members who included them\, on such topics as women's willingness and ability to homestead\, women's equality\, and women's role in marriage and reproduction. \n\n\n\nHannah Haksgaard is a Professor of Law at the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law where she teaches in the areas of property law and family law. She writes on those topics as well as the rural lawyer shortage. Hannah received her B.A. from the University of Kentucky and her J.D. from Berkeley Law. After law school\, she clerked for federal judges at the District of South Dakota and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. \n\n\n\nThis presentation is being sponsored by the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law.  The presentation will take place Thursday\, November 10th beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the community room of the Pipestone County Courthouse.  The event is FREE and open to the public.
