SUMMARY:Sioux Quartzite - A Fresh Look at a Familiar Rock
DESCRIPTION:PIPESTONE COUNTY MUSEUM TO HOST: The Sioux Quartzite A Fresh Look at a Familiar Rock\n\nThis presentation\, by Jeanne Fromm\, Geology Professor at the University of South Dakota\, will be held at the Pipestone County Museum (113 S. Hiawatha Ave.\, Pipestone\, MN) on Saturday\, April 13th\, beginning at 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n\nThis presentation will take a look at the stone that is the bedrock of the region and the building block of Pipestone's Historic District. Pipestone County could also be thought of as Pinkstone County since a ham-colored rock is found throughout the natural and built environment. The Sioux Quartzite is an ancient rock and has left a record that geologists study to understand Earth conditions during the last 1\,680\,000\,000 years and that's a lot of zeros! On April 13\, Jeanne Fromm\, geologist\, will bring rock samples and a presentation to help participants see this familiar stone in a new way. Observations will be made of the color\, occurrence\, composition and minerals\, texture\, hardness\, banding and striping\, mottles\, cracks\, ripple marks\, and mud cracks to infer how and when the rock was formed and the remarkable environmental changes this stone has endured.\n\n\n\nCost to attend this event is $5.00 for nonmembers\, $3.00 for members and FREE to children 12 and under.
