Spring Star Party
The semiannual night sky viewing party has returned to Pipestone National Monument. Visit the park on Saturday, May 7, from 8:30 p.m. ? 9:30 p.m. for an evening of stargazing and learning. Dr. Nathan Grau (Augustana University) and Dr. Judy Vondruska (South Dakota State University) will set up telescopes in front of the Visitor Center to show visitors the night sky up close and answer astronomical questions. The event falls on a New Moon, making distant galaxies and globular clusters more visible. You may even see our solar system?s smallest planet ? Mercury! This is a relaxed event - bring a lawn chair or blanket and see your park after dark with the whole family! Kids will have an opportunity to complete the Night Sky Junior Ranger Program and earn an activity-related patch. The event is free and open to the public. Free hot cocoa, cider, and star snacks will be available while supplies last. Visitors are not required to stay for the duration of the event.

HPI Tour of Tables
Historic Pipestone, Inc. will hold a “Tour of Tables” May 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone. Doors open at 10 a.m. so visitors can view the set tables. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Tickets, $20 each, will be sold by each table host. Tickets for touring, without lunch, are $5 and will be available at the door. For those unfamiliar with what a Tour of Table is: Volunteers offer to set, decorate and host a table. Each host picks a theme and decorates the table accordingly, with appropriate dishes, decorations or accessories of their choice. Each host will be given the number of tickets to fill each seat at their table. If the hosts are unable to sell the tickets allotted to them, they can turn them in for sale to others. “We will be serving a nice lunch and offering music and door prizes,” said Laurie Ness, HPI chair for the event. Ness said up to 18 tables will be available. Some circular tables require a table service of six, while rectangular tables require service for eight. People who would like to host a table should contact or leave a message with Ness (507-215-0651) or talk to any HPI board member. Several tables have already been assigned. “Ever wondered what to do with mother’s or grandmother’s china, that set of favorite Christmas dishes or fun outdoorsy table settings? This is your chance to show it off,” Ness said. Funds raised by the event will be used entirely for HPI’s ongoing renovation and maintenance of the Historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Museum's "Coffee Talk" with Sue Parsley

How to Clean Gravestones
Back by request after the successful demonstration in the fall of 2021, the Pipestone County Historical Society invites you to join us for a second demonstration by Steve Sittig that will focus on how to remove dirt, debris, and lichen from cemetery stones. Steve is a member of the Dell Rapids Cemetery Board and has been cleaning stones for 5 years. He uses the same product that is used to clean stones at Arlington National Cemetery. Steve?s demonstration will take place Saturday, May 21st beginning at 1:00 p.m. at North Eden Cemetery (west of Ihlen 2 miles on County Road 2 to County Road 13, 1/2 mile south). Steve will discuss and demonstrate the process he uses on gravestones that the Pipestone County Historical Society has received family permission to use for this purpose. Attendance is limited to 15. Preregistration is REQUIRED. Payment must be received at the time of registration. All sales are final. To register, stop in or call the Pipestone County Museum.

Researching Your Civil War Ancestor

Annual Avenues of Flags Notice: Flags will be set at the following locations: Downtown Courthouse Cemetery Highway 30 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 10-16 People will be needed for setup & tear down. Free Entrance at Split Rock Creek State Park
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is offering free admission to all 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas on four ?Free Park Days? in 2022. Saturday, June 11, 2022 is one of four days each year on which the DNR waives entrance fees to state parks. The entrance fee waiver does not cover activities like camping, rentals or tours. The goal of Free Park Days is to get all Minnesotans outdoors. Research shows that spending time outdoors in nature provides multiple health and wellness benefits. ?Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are open year-round to provide places for people to get away from life?s everyday demands and be surrounded by the beauty of nature,? said Ann Pierce, director of the DNR Parks and Trails Division. ?We hope that visitors who go to a state park or recreation area for the first time on Free Park Day will have fun and want to come back.?

A zany, wholesome, hilarious musical revue presented by the Little Sisters of Hoboken, Nunsense is a heavenly delight! Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of ?Grease.? Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. The Calumet Players will stage Dan Goggin's Nunsense on June 16-19 and June 23-26. Thursday through Saturday evening shows start at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees start at 2:00 pm. A zany, wholesome, hilarious musical revue presented by the Little Sisters of Hoboken, Nunsense is a heavenly delight! Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of ?Grease.? Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. One-Room Schoolhouse Open
The District #3 One-Room Schoolhouse at Moore Park will be open to the public on Thursdays through the summer (June 9 through September 1) from 12:30 pm to 3 pm. Activities will start outdoors at 12:30 pm with schoolyard games. At 1:00 pm, retired school teacher Diane Hansen will greet students inside with educational activities. Volunteers will be present to share information about the oldest country school in the county!

Parade & Lineup Info
The 33rd Annual Water Tower Festival Parade is Saturday, June 25th! Lineup is at 9:30 AM, and the parade starts at 10:00 AM. The parade route will again run from the 500 block of West Main St to Hiawatha Avenue, then turning South past the Courthouse. Attached are the lineup and a corresponding lineup map. VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY RULE? No candy, prizes, or objects may be thrown from floats or moving vehicles. Candy will drop into the street and kids will go after it which creates a potentially dangerous situation for drivers, especially large vehicles. If your parade unit wishes to distribute items, please have walkers to hand items directly to the crowd. SPACING?Please help us avoid gaps in the parade. Keep a safe distance between you and the entry in front of you (approximately 50 ft). Keep pace with the entry in front of you, not the pace of your walkers. WEATHER?Please visit the Pipestone Area Chamber of Commerce facebook page or listen to KLOH 1050 AM Radio for weather-related announcements. Any postponement of the parade will be made by 8:00 am.
