Be a citizen scientist for a day! Help park rangers and other fungal enthusiasts find and photograph fungi throughout the park! You will learn a little bit about Minnesota's mushrooms and have a chance to explore parts of the park rarely seen by visitors. Meet at the Visitor Center at 8:45 am for a brief introductory talk before we head out to explore. Use your phone to photograph what you see and upload your observations to iNaturalist to help park biologists better understand fungal communities within the monument. What to Bring? Yourself and your phone! It is helpful to download the free iNaturalist app before your visit. This is an outdoor, off-trail event so please dress accordingly. This event is appropriate for all ages and is free and open to the public - no experience necessary! For more information about the event, call (507) 825-5464, ext. 214, to speak to a park ranger. Stay tuned to Pipestone National Monument's facebook page for updates in case of inclement weather. Directions are available through this link: https://www.nps.gov/pipe/planyourvisit/directions.htm

On Wednesday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m., Pipestone National Monument (Monument) will host a public meeting in the Visitor Center to seek feedback on a proposed pedestrian access trail into the park. The purpose of the new trail would be to provide safe pedestrian access from Hiawatha Avenue to the park?s Quarry Trail, Circle Trail, and Visitor Center. Currently, many visitors access the park by walking the entrance road, which is a safety concern. In addition, trail connectivity between the City of Pipestone and the Monument may improve recreational opportunities, reduce fossil fuel emissions, and benefit the local economy. The City of Pipestone has been closely involved in early project scoping and development. We would appreciate public feedback on the trail routes under consideration and represented in the image above and attached. The NPS is preparing a draft plan and environmental assessment (EA), which will provide additional information and analysis. At this time, Trail Option #2 is the NPS preferred option. We anticipate sharing that draft EA with the public for additional review and comment in late 2022.
