Indigenous Peoples' Day Luminary Walk
Mark your calendars - the evening of October 7th, we'll celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day! The trail with be filled with lights for a self-guided experience. Indigenous singers, musicians, and dancers will be at various locations around the trail filling the prairie with the sounds and traditions of people who have called this site home for centuries. Free hot cocoa and cider available while supplies last!
Museum's Monthly "Coffee Talk"
OCTOBER COFFEE TALK TO FEATURE THE STORY OF CHESTER HUSTON You are invited to join the Pipestone County Historical Society for its October Coffee Talk on Thursday, October 19th, when Trava Olivier, Museum Educator for the Pipestone County History Society will be sharing the story of the Pipestone Black Sox baseball team. This African American team was based out of Pipestone from May to August 1926. Guests will hear how the team came to Pipestone and about their winning season. Coffee Talks are FREE for all members of the public to attend. If you are unable to attend in person, the presentation will be recorded and shared on the Museum's YouTube channel. The link to the video will be on the Pipestone County Museum's website as soon as it is available.
"Pioneer Women 1880 - 1915"
Dr. Anita Gaul, History Professor with Minnesota West Community and Technical College, will be sharing her presentation entitled ''Pioneer Women 1880-1915'' at the Pipestone County Museum on Saturday, October 21st beginning at 1:00 p.m. This presentation will share information on how women were essential to the success of the homestead, and how they helped to shape the political, economic, and cultural climate of their rural communities. Cost to attend this event is $5.00 person ($3.00 for members of the Pipestone County Historical Society) and FREE for children 12 and under. The Pipestone County Museum is located at 113 S. RECSCHEDULED: Deserted Wives and Homesteading Rights
***Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be rescheduling our Nov. 2 speaker, Hannah Haksgaard to the spring.***Join the Pipestone County Museum as Hannah Haksgaard, author, and Professor of Law, looks at the Homestead Act of 1862 and how it dealt with a specific group of women; deserted wives. These were the women who came west to homestead with their husbands, but found themselves, the marriage, and the homestead abandoned. The legal rights of deserted wives were unclear under the Homestead Act. This program will cover how these women successfully made legal and factual arguments to gain ownership of homesteads.
